The different types of contracts

There are numerous and different types of work contracts provided for by the legislation in force that relates to the topic, the main one being the "Organic discipline of employment contracts and revision of the legislation" contained in Legislative Decree 81 of 15 June 2015 and subsequent amendments.

In particular, subordinate employment relationships (characterised by the obligation for the worker to perform his/her job, in exchange for remuneration, under the direction of the employer) are differentiated from non-subordinate employment relationships.

The normal type of subordinate employment relationship is the permanent contract, but there are also other types of contracts characterised by specific characteristics or by particular ways in which the service must be performed, such as the fixed-term contract, the part-time contract, remote work, intermittent or on-call work, agricultural work, seasonal work and apprenticeships.

Non-subordinate employment relationships include occasional services, coordinated and continuous collaboration (co.co.co.), self-employment and work via digital platforms.

An in-depth description of the main types of contracts is outlined in section on the subject published on cliclavoro, the Ministry of Labour and Social Policies’ website.
